We don’t exist in a bubble. And no matter how introverted you are, if you have the dream of “someday” getting published, you need people. Good people. Positive-feedback givers, real-life story swappers, and, most important, cheerleaders. I’ll be the first to say it’s really hard to find these groups, but not impossible.
I wrote an article previously on critique groups. All critique groups are not created equal! Some are designed for beginners, others for fun (those who may not be interested in publishing, per se, but write solely for the enjoyment of writing), and some groups tailor to those at all levels. I think you can find great value in ones that exist online, through virtual meetings (especially nowadays, in the post-COVID era).
In my personal experience, I’ve searched online, I’ve attended in-person writing groups, and I’ve even looked for critique partners in costly workshops. It took years (yes…years, plural), but I finally found an amazing, trustworthy beta reader, and an incredible in-person group of talented and dedicated writers. And I did so without spending a fortune (in fact, the group I’m in now is FREE).
I got lucky.
Very lucky.
But this isn’t to suggest that you shouldn’t spend some money to join a professional writer’s organization, because oftentimes it’s absolutely worth the investment! As the old adage goes: “You get what you pay for.” I think there’s truth to the idea that people will want to get more out of something they pay for, because once money is on the line, there’s more value placed on their investment.
Regardless, it takes time to find people who enjoy the things you write and vice versa.
I recommend looking into professional organizations and online courses where you can meet other writers who are serious about their craft.
Here’s a couple that I’ve found useful:
- The Manuscript Academy They have various courses as well as monthly memberships in which you can cancel anytime! They also have a great podcast that I’ve found helpful and informative: https://manuscriptacademy.com/podcast
- NaNoWriMo I cannot talk about writing groups and community without mentioning NANOWRIMO! One of my favorite events of all time.
- Your local library! A place for all writerly people (and those who love books!) This should be a no brainer ( ; If you don’t have a local writers’ group… consider starting one! https://libraryfinder.org/
- Reedsy This site is a mix of many things: writing community, writing contests, free resources, and all things writing!
Find your community! There’s no reason to go it alone.
